We continue to explore issues in Empirical Trade assuming the student has mastered the fundamentals in microeconomics, trade theory and applied econometrics. All readings will be from leading journals, all available online through the university website. Feenstra (2004) as well as Bowen, Hollander and Viaene (2001) will also, occasionally be referred to. The syllabus will be somewhat eclectic, as is the field of empirical trade, and reflects the strengths and research areas of the instructor. Students will be required to write either: (a) an extensive and critical literature review on empirical trade topic of their choice; or (b) write a short, empirical paper based on the methods studied in class.

The course will use a traditional “talk and chalk” approach by the professor. However, as student numbers will be small, all students will be expected to actively participate in the material and may occasionally be called up the board to explain points or problems in more detail. Preliminary and final presentations by the students will be powerpoint presentations with active comments and questions by other students.
