This course will examine the classical and contemporary characteristics of Japanese culture and society, in relation to the fact of ‘transition from under-developed country to highly industrialized modern state’. Detailed consideration is given to the role of religion and daily way of thinking in the formation process of capitalism: also to popular culture, the position of women and the nature of work in Japanese companies today. Consideration will also be given to the sociological theory on 1990s Asian economic development such as ‘the Confucian Capitalist Thesis.

Main purpose of this course is that a foreign student who first comes to Japan knows the essence of Japanese culture and society for making her/his daily life comfortable. Also, acquired knowledge of Japan will help her/his own research of Public Policy and Taxation.
