This course will examine the traditional and contemporary characteristics of Japanese culture and society, in relation to the fact of ‘transition from under-developed country to highly industrialized modern state’. Detailed consideration is given to the role of religion and daily way of thinking in the formation process of capitalism: also to popular culture, the position of women and the nature of work in Japanese companies today. Consideration will also be given to the sociological theory on 1990s Asian economic development such as ‘the Confucian Capitalist Thesis. The students are expected to learn a certain level of basic knowledge of Japanese culture and society through this course. They are also expected to know how to write a summary handout of textbook, how to make a presentation by Power Point, how to organize a classroom discussion and etc. Eventually, newly acquired knowledge of Japan will help her/his own research of Public Policy and Taxation.

No particular preparation is required for a lecture except the case of reporter of the textbook. Instead, a student in charge of the report for a class should prepare a handout and presentation Power Point. All of the students are requested to review the contents of the class.

A high level of report with a well prepared handout, Power Point presentation, a good organization of class discussion, and an excellent term paper will earn a grade of A.
|

A standard level of report with a normally prepared handout, Power Point presentation, a standard level of organization of class discussion, and a standard level of term paper will earn a grade of C.
