This course is designed to give comprehensive and systematic knowledge about the essential features of Japanese world-class manufacturers concerning their production systems and manufacturing strategies. The features are compared with those of typical American and European counterparts. We would like to examine not only the concrete practices known as JIT, kanban system, TQM, kaizen, concurrent engineering, etc. but also fundamental thinking or philosophy toward production management underlying those practices. Faced with severe competition in global markets and excess appreciation of yen, however, most Japanese manufacturing companies have been rethinking about their philosophy and strategies established during the long time of high growth, which has forced some of the practices to be changed or damaged. Those recent problems and challenges for Japan based manufacturing companies must be discussed and analyzed by means of fundamental techniques for empirical research.

1. The instructor delivers a short lecture on each topic included in the syllabus and the textbook.
2. The instructor leads the discussion on case materials provided through YNU-LMS. Active participation in the class discussions is required.
3. For most of the case materials, students are required to submit case reports before the class discussion.
4. Students are required to make two group and presentations on important topics after thorough discussions by groups assigned. Submit a PPT file by email or through YNU-LMS one day before the group presentation.
5. Plant visits might be arranged to touch and realize actual operations.
