This graduate course is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of the major theories that have animated the field of social and cultural theory. The course traces the development of these theories from the early 20th century to the present and provides students with targeted exposure to the Frankfurt School, British Cultural Studies, and poststructural and postmodern cultural theories.

You will gain a foundational understanding of the most valuable and reliable methodologies available for studying and interpreting social and cultural phenomena. You will also sharpen your analytical skills through the study of critical theories that define the Modern and the Postmodern.

Students are evaluated based on (1) the degree of preparation for class discussion; (2) a series of short written assignments (3-5 pages) covering each of the topic areas listed above; and (3) a longer term paper consisting of a theoretical analysis of critique, a critical review of the literature, or a research paper with a strong theoretical foundation. Grades are based on class participation and written work.
