This course provides an overview of the field of financial economics which may help the students in the doctoral course of any field of management: 1. understand the academic and practical issues in financial markets and decision making of participants in the markets, 2. learn the approaches and ideas behind in the economic researches around these issues, 3. have some knowledge, through the discussion, on the characteristics of Japanese firms, financial markets which are different from or commonly shared with other countries.

Students should read some chapters in the books or articles which are assigned in advance of each class. Reading related literature which is not assigned is desirable. It may be effective in the discussion and contribution to the class.

1. To have deep understanding on the academic and practical issues in financial markets and decision making of participants in the markets which are provided in this course. 2. To have skills for using the approaches provided in this course and deep understanding on the ideas behind in the economic researches. 3. To have knowledge and clear-cut views on the pictures about the characteristics of Japanese firms or markets which are different from or commonly shared with other countries. They need not be only about financial aspect.

Grading is based on: 1. 70%: participation and contribution to the discussion in this course(presentation for the exercises are included). If the LMS is mainly used in the risk of covid19, then participation part will be through the discussion by LMS. 2. 30%: submitting term papers.

If the risk of covid19 is serious and it is difficult to provide face to face classes, then LMS is mainly used for distribution of handouts to read and discussion based on them. Otherwise, the following usual style is condidered in face to face classes: Each class in this course is provided as a mixture of standing lecture and discussion among students. Basically, each student should read and bring the assigned books or articles to the classroom. Exercises are assigned during the class or as assignments for homework. The presentation is performed by students. Whether the work is individual or group-type is determined for each exercise.
