This course addresses the main current management issues companies are facing in Japan, mainly from an HR perspective. The importance of addressing these challenges from an HR perspective is reflected in Japanese companies’ perception according to which the number one management issue refers to strengthening human resources (JMA). This course will provide basic knowledge about the main characteristics of Japanese management and Japanese employment system and it will cover topics such as particularities of recruitment and training in Japanese companies, different types of employment, career management etc.

Students are expected to read in advance about the topics to be discussed during the next lecture – the detailed topics to be prepared will be indicated during each class Students are expected to review the course content, based on the distributed materials.

By the end of this course, the students will be able to explain and analyze the current issues in Japanese management especially from an HR perspective and deepen their understanding regarding the advantages and challenges of the current Japanese management practices. Students will also be able to express their opinion on possible solutions for the topics addressed during classes.

By the end of this course, the students will be able to understand and explain the main Japanese management practices and the current challenges companies have to respond to in order to adapt to both environmental changes and to the shift in employees’ attitudes toward work.
